Barcelona sets up an emotional support helpline for citizens

The new service, created within the context of the current Covid-19 health crisis, comes in addition to other similar initiatives specifically designed for domestic workers, the self-employed, young people and teenagers. The goal is to prevent people’s mental health from deteriorating as a result of the confinement period, particularly those who are most vulnerable.

Barcelona City Council and the Official Association of Psychologists of Catalonia (COPC) have agreed to set up a new helpline to provide emotional support for citizens. The measure comes in response to the Covid-19 health emergency and will initially operate for three months. The goal is to look after people’s mental and emotional health, particularly those most vulnerable, given the possible deterioration caused by the period in confinement.

The phone number is 649 756 713. The service operates seven days a week, from 9 am to 8 pm, also accessible to people with deafness. There will initially be four lines in service, with the possibility of additional lines up to a maximum of eighteen, depending on demand. Calls will be handled by a team of 36 experienced psychologists. The helpline will be available for anyone who needs it, and if the professionals consider it necessary users will be referred to the psychology services or to relevant psychotherapy. In case of detecting a problem of gender-based violence, referral will be made to the relevant service.

The new psychology service for the general public complements other specific services for different sectors:

  • Emotional support for the self-employed: the number is 900 505 805 (using the access key AUTONOMS2020), available from 6 am to midnight.
  • Emotional support for domestic and care workers: the number is also 900 505 805 (using access key DOMICILIO2020), available from 6 am to midnight.
  • Psychological support for municipal staff operating essential services: Barcelona City Councils’ labour risk prevention service has started a new psychological support service for staff currently working to provide services deemed essential.
  • Psychological support for other professionals providing essential services: the number is 935 678 856, available seven days a week from 9 am to 8 pm.
  • Hope line: the number is 682 900 500, available around the clock, 365 days a year.
  • Specific support for young people adapting to the new situation:
    • The “Servei per Adolescents i Famílies” (SAIF), formed by the service of listening and accompaniment for young people from 12 to 20 years old “Aquí t’escoltem” and by the “Centre per a Famílies amb Adolescents,” enables a new contact telephone number from which to answer all queries: 601 641 056. You can send a message by WhatsApp, from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 7 pm, and they will contact you. You need to indicate your name, age, district of residence and, briefly, the reason for the consultation. If you prefer, you can also call, as well as receive individual and confidential attention from both services, through their usual specific channels.
