Agreement to speed up the construction of the Gaia, Entença and Xirinacs schools
The Full Council has approved the interadministrative agreement between Barcelona City Council, the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Education Consortium to speed up work on the three new schools. To make this happen, the City Council is advancing 41 million euros to start the tendering processes and execute the building work.
The Escola Gaia will be housed in two halls at the former umbrella factory at C/ Dos de Maig, 189, within the Parc de la Canòpia. The old textile complex will be renovated to turn it into a school with two classes per year group. The project should entail an investment of 11.5 million euros.
The Institut Escola Xirinacs will occupy the two buildings that housed the workshops at the former prison of La Model. The buildings will be revamped and connected internally to establish the two sections for the all-through school. The budget for the project is 17.4 million euros.
The Escola Entença will be built on the former site of the Barcelona Fire Service at C/ Provença, 178. The building will have 3,700 square metres, with a ground floor and five upper floors and an outside space of 1,500 square metres. The budget for this project is 12.2 million euros.
The location for this third school forms part of a larger project, where half of the site by the former fire station will be used for the school and the other half for a healthcare building linked to the Hospital Clínic.
Shared funding for the three projects
The agreement includes the regulation of the rights and duties of each stakeholder and is valid for six years, with the possibility of extending it for a further four years if needed.
Barcelona City Council is temporarily advancing 41 million euros, which will mainly be assumed by the Government of Catalonia (33.2 million euros). The City Council will ultimately be contributing 7.9 million euros.
