Transformation of Av. Roma to start with the section between Viladomat and Calàbriaió de l’avinguda de Roma

The transformation project for Av. Roma has been outlined to local people and will gain more pedestrian space and greenery in the entire section still to be remodelled in the Esquerra de l’Eixample neighbourhood. Work in the first section between the streets of Viladomat and Calàbria is due to start in 2026 and should be completed in the spring of 2027, with an expected budget of 4.5 million euros. The draft for the final project has already been commissioned and will follow on from the sections already completed: Aragó-Urgell in 2004, and Comte d’Urgell-Viladomat in 2010.

This is the first work in the reurbanisation project planned for the whole section still to be revamped in the avenue, between Viladomat and Pl. Països Catalans. The revamp to the area around the Edifici Estel (currently in the final stage of being remodelled) and the transformation in progress in the area around Estació de Sants have speeded up the overall study analysing the whole area still to be transformed. Work on the first section should fit in with the rest of the area, which already has a draft project, and cover the two following blocks between the streets of Calàbria and Entença.

The work in the area between Viladomat and Calàbria will transform the whole avenue, with much more space for pedestrians, more shade (taking into account that the street surface here is directly above the rail tunnel that reaches Sants and planting trees is not possible). Av. Roma will become a large space to stroll along, with priority for pedestrian routes and connected meeting spaces. In the large open area in the avenue, in front of the Edifici Estel, a large space of 8,800 square metres is planned, which will include the part now being reurbanised in the immediate vicinity of the building, plus a dog recreation area of some 5000 square metres. On the northern side, a service lane will be installed with curbless paving to provide access to buildings there in the same way as the rest of the avenue which has already been transformed.
