More pedestrian space in La Rambla with the reorganisation of terraces
The project forms part of the revamp to the central section, scheduled for January 2026, the goal being a new people-centred avenue that strengthens the identity of one of the city’s main thoroughfares. The reorganisation of terraces in the central section should free up 1,436 square metres for pedestrians and improve the quality of commercial, cultural and eating options in La Rambla.
As from January, work gets under way on infrastructures, paving, lighting and urban furniture in the different parts of the central section, between El Liceu, Pla de l’Ós and C/ Nou de la Rambla.
Carried out in conjunction with the Restaurant Guild and Amics de la Rambla, this new stage of work brings the temporary suspension of licences at the terraces affected, as well as the provisional relocation of some elements, such as the press stalls and flower stalls, while work is in progress.
Recent months have seen work progress in the section between Pl. Catalunya and the streets of Santa Anna and Bonsuccés, where the lateral occupation of terraces has been removed to facilitate the work
More pedestrian space and a more organised Rambla
Terraces will be located exclusively in the central section and must respect some distances that guarantee the movement of people and maintain entrances clear to the metro, monuments, garden elements, lighting, tree beds and reserved entrances.
The reorganisation of terraces forms part of a comprehensive urban project which started in June 2024 and which should take 34 months, with an investment of 55.6 million euros. During the work, a fixed information point is available for the new Rambla, located at the Palau de la Virreina (La Rambla, 99).
