Mercedes Vidal: “We need sufficient minimum services to guarantee mobility”
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has called on the Ministry for Business and Knowledge to decree minimum services of 50% during rush hour and 30% the rest of the day during strike action scheduled from 18 to 22 June.
The Councillor for Mobility and chair of TMB, Mercedes Vidal, declared: “We have to guarantee the right to strike, but we must also guarantee citizens’ right to mobility and make them compatible”. Vidal noted that during the most recent strike, from 30 May to 2 June, the service levels decreed were 40% during rush hour and 20% at off-peak times. “That led to access being restricted and closed at some of the main stations”, added the Councillor.
To avoid the situation being repeated, the Ministry for Business and Knowledge has been asked for minimum service levels not to be reduced and for 50% of services to be guaranteed. “Anything below that figure is very difficult to manage. We need sufficient minimum services to guarantee mobility”, explained Vidal.
On the subject of negotiations, Vidal explained: “It’s a complex scenario, but negotiations and mediation are ongoing. We feel that as we’ve managed to reach an agreement with TMB bus service workers, that should also be possible with metro workers”.
