‘Open Streets’: more neighbourhood, more walking space and more local commerce

A Barcelona with a neighbourhood focus, with space to walk in, to browse and to buy things in shops. Every weekend, from 9 am to 8 pm, the streets of Creu Coberta – Carrer de Sants and Gran de Gràcia open up to people and close to traffic, becoming places for walking and recreation, providing a boost for local shops and businesses and helping people stick to safety distances.

Every Saturday and Sunday, from 9 am to 9 pm, Carretera de Sants – Creu Coberta will be closed between Plaça d’Espanya and Carrer d’Arizala. The section to be closed to traffic in Carrer Gran de Gràcia is between Carrer de Nil Fabra and Plaça de Nicolás Salmeron. At the request of local retailers, traffic will be restricted in two sections of Travessera de Gràcia every Saturday between 9 am and 9 pm. The sections are between Gran de Gràcia and Torrent de l’Olla, and between Torrent de l’Olla and Milà i Fontanals.

During the restrictions, access will be permitted for vehicles used by municipal services, emergency services and people with reduced mobility. Access to car parks will also be allowed.

‘Open Streets’ comes on top of other measures such as traffic-calmed streets, superblocks and the promotion of sustainable mobility, to achieve a safer, healthier and more human city.

The programme, which was applied in seven large areas during part of the state of emergency, now makes a return and adapts to the type of street and its usual uses, at the same time addressing demands from local people.
