Strategy to optimise the social return of tourism in the neighbourhoods

The territorial strategy for the management of tourism outlines the main needs and priorities for districts in terms of managing tourism and acts a road map for optimising the social return of tourism at a local level. Some 1.8 million euros a year will be used to fund the strategy, the money coming for the tourist tax for overnight stays at tourist accommodation in the city.

The document includes 261 measures based on the priorities agreed by each district and therefore provides a local emphasis for tourism policies within the Strategic Tourism Plan 2020.

The plan aims for tourism to have a multiplying effect on commercial activity and other sectors in each neighbourhood, highlighting and promoting local assets for visitors, spreading visits more evenly and mitigating the negative effects of tourism. This means combining the use of regulations with a boost in responsibility and sustainability, ensuring tourism’s compatibility with the daily life of local residents.

The strategy includes requests from all districts, their volume and nature conditioned by the extent to which each territory is affected by tourism. Projects include the integrated management of major tourist attractions such as the Sagrada Família and the Park Güell, initiatives to turn the Camp Nou stadium and the Museu Joan Gamper into a hub for socio-economic activity, the management of the Turo de la Rovira hilltop from a city perspective and the regaining of Montjuïc mountain as a green lung for the city.

The strategy is to be presented as a municipal government measure at the next session of the Commission for Economy and Treasury.
