Renewal of litter bins and pneumatic waste collection systems in Ciutat Vella

Work is under way to replace 221 pneumatic waste drop-boxes in Ciutat Vella which are in poor condition due to corrosion, along with 1,504 litter bins and the installation of a further twenty. The process is being carried out as part of Pla Endreça. In addition, two pilot projects will test anti-seagull litter bins and large capacity bins with compacting systems.

The new waste collection drop-boxes being installed in the district of Ciutat Vella are more ergonomic and practical as they prevent bulky items from being inserted. The systems feature a vertical opening with a round pod top and a pedal for opening them. Additional anti-corrosive protection has been applied to them and they include a sensor to detect home full the recipients are, offering improved management. Various awareness measures are being carried out to inform local residents of the process.

Substitution of litter bins and two pilot projects

All the litter bins in the district are being replaced with standardised models to increase waste collection from public bins by 8%. In all, 1,504 bins will be renewed with two models, one with a capacity of 70 litres and another with a capacity of 220 litres, the latter for the busiest public spaces. Twenty new litter bins will also be installed in the area to boost waste collection in areas with more intensive public use.

Two pilot projects are also being launched at the same time, with bins adapted to the characteristics of Ciutat Vella. One project will see 15 bins installed in Pl. Gardunya, with side openings to stop seagulls from emptying them. The other will see 10 large-volume bins with self-compacting systems installed at points in the district with more intensive public use, such as Av. Cathedral, La Rambla and Plaça del Mar.
