More community space and greenery for Rambla del Raval

The project to remodel Rambla del Raval, Plaça de Vázquez Montalbán and Plaça de Salvador Seguí will facilitate community use, with more areas for young people and senior citizens, new children’s play areas and more greenery. The project has been defined with input from local residents via a participatory process, with work due to start in March and concluding the summer.

The project is part of the Neighbourhood Plan for El Raval Sud and Gòtic Sud and aims to improve daily life for local residents, prevent uses of public space which exclude others and improve connectivity between the avenue and the two squares.

The project has been designed by the Vora Arquitectura studio and has a budget of 1.3 million euros.

An avenue with more life

The revamp to Rambla del Raval involves widening the central section on both sides, reorganising and adding urban furniture and new green spaces to boost the avenue’s role as a place where local people meet.

Four parterres will also be constructed for use by young people, one specifically for the KN60lab participatory process to define the future uses for the young people’s area in Can Seixanta, as well as new children’s play areas and multi-purpose areas.

At the same time, Botero’s sculpture Gat will be moved to the central section of the avenue to give it more prominence, a water spring will be installed and all the street lighting replaced.

In terms of mobility, changes will be made to improve safety at the pedestrian crossings to the north and the south of the avenue, while C/ Maria Aurèlia Capmany and C/ Sant Oleguer will be turned into pedal-friendly streets, sharing space with private vehicles.

Change of image for Plaça de Vázquez Montalbán

The revamp to Plaça de Vázquez Montalbán is intended to give the square its own identity and foster public use. The square is currently underused due to its hard and slightly uninviting character.

Specifically, a landscape of small mounds will be created, with shaded areas and more seating. Games will also be painted on the ground to prompt more activity, such as a badminton court, with table-tennis and fut-toc tables set up there too.

Lighting will also be improved in the subway beneath the UGT building, connecting Rambla del Raval with Plaça de Salvador Seguí.

More greenery and games in Salvador Seguí

The games area in Pl. Salvador Seguí is to be extended, with a recreation area for children up to the age of 12, with rubber mounds and play features and elements.

A new parterre will also be planted with vegetation, new seating installed and rest areas created.
