The book ‘Barcelona, la meva ciutat’ reaches classrooms

How big is our city? How many children live here? Where do we come from? The answers to these questions and many others can be found in ‘Barcelona, la meva ciutat’, which was presented at the Escola Turó Blau in the district of Sant Andreu.

Written by Marina Luz García and illustrated by Neus Caamaño, the book is an educational tool for children between the ages of 10 and 12. It invites readers to discover the city and its neighbourhoods from a different and original perspective: following an 11-year-old girl by the name of Laia as she asks families, friends and members of the public to find out how things work around her and in her city.

The publication explains the city and who makes it up, a multi-cultural society with a diversity of religions, languages and countries of origin, and covers various topics including the environment, commerce, popular culture, tourism and public transport.

The educational project is designed to be carried out in the classroom with pupils between their 3rd and 6th years at primary school, encouraging them to take part in improving the city by giving ideas and input.

Distribution in publicly operated schools and state-subsidised private schools

Published by Barcelona City Council as part of the ‘Barcelona Beceroles’ collection, the book has been distributed to all publicly operated schools and state-subsidised private schools in the city, which have each received twenty copies to work with in the classroom. Barcelona, la meva ciutat can also be found in bookshops.

The book is also complemented with a digital booklet of activities which can be downloaded for free from the Barcelona Llibres website. This digital notebook includes activities inviting users to engage in research and find more information on the city and its neighbourhoods, and at the same time indicates how to make children’s proposals reach the City Council.

The initiative offers a highly visual, clear and easily understandable portrait of the city, from the inside and from various perspectives, helping children to feel they form part of a diverse social unit, and to recognise themselves as key pieces in the city of Barcelona.
