Support for more than fifteen thousand young jobseekers over the last year

Backed by Barcelona Activa, trade unions and various other bodies and organisations, the Commission for the Plan to Foster the Employment of Young People met to assess the results of the shock plan to combat unemployment among young people and support young talent. Through an investment of 12.8 million euros, the plan boosts quality training, offers tailored programmes and helps young people into the labour market.

The 15,324 young people who received jobseeking support from Barcelona Activa represent a figure which almost equates to the number of unemployed people under the age of 30 in the city. These are people who were hit hard by the economic crisis resulting from the pandemic and who this action plan was designed for.

The unemployment level among this age group is high, above the city average. Considering the general unemployment figure among women is higher than among men, it is significant that over half of the women who received support via the plan were women (53%).

The plan started in 2021, and since then unemployment among young people in the city has dropped more than the average. To be precise, the figure has dropped to the current 6,773 young people, according to data from the Business and Employment Observatory. Other data certifying this trend come from the Working Population Survey, showing that unemployment among people aged 16 to 24 has fallen from 43.2% to 22.3%, a drop of nearly 50%.

Guidance on training, academic focus, labour and emotional bearings

The plan consists of different programmes for young people:

In addition, over forty thousand enquiries have been handled from young people over the last year, relating to training, academic focus, labour and emotional bearings, with action also implemented to introduce secondary school students to Barcelona Activa through the Professional Life Project, which seeks to promote new vocations and entrepreneurial spirit.

The Barcelona Education Consortium has also helped nearly six thousand people through the Young People’s Plan, while the Fundació BCN-FP has managed 260 municipal dual vocational training places.
