Final step before work begins to connect the tram systems in Av. Diagonal

The approval of the executive project to build the tram section between Pl. Glòries and C/ Verdaguer means the final steps can now be completed for work to begin in the first half of 2021. The work itself should take 21.5 months to complete. At the same time, traffic calming measures will be implemented in Av. Diagonal, prioritising pedestrians, meeting areas and greenery.

The Board of Directors for the Metropolitan Transport Authority has unanimously approved the construction project for the first stage to connect the tram systems in Av. Diagonal. The tram link between Pl. Glòries and C/ Verdaguer will enable passengers to get from one point to the other in seven minutes. The link is expected to be used by 18,000 passengers a day. Three stops will be created (Verdaguer, Sicília and Monumental) and the Glòries stop will be moved to a new location.

The project for the first stage to link the tram systems in Av. Diagonal will be tendered and awarded during the last quarter of 2020, with work to begin in the first half of 2021 and conclude in 2023. The work will cost 44.4 million euros.

At the same time, street calming measures will be implemented in Av. Diagonal between Pl. Glòries and C/ Verdaguer. This will create 13,000 square metres of extra space, with more bike lanes and green spaces added.

Once the connection is completed, the tram system will link nine municipalities in the metropolitan area with the city centre through a more efficient and sustainable transport system.
