The revamped Magic Fountain in Montjuïc returns for La Mercè
The water jets at the Magic Fountain in Montjuïc, as well as all the other fountains in Av. Reina Maria Cristina, are set to spout water again from the day of La Mercè, Wednesday 24 September, now the renovation work has been completed at this iconic city site.
The Magic Fountain in Montjuïc regains its displays of water, sound and light with the music and firework spectacular for La Mercè on Sunday, 28 September, at 10 pm. The fountain has a new control system for sound and LED lighting, with more advanced technology and sustainability criteria. The revamp to the Magic Fountain was carried out as part of the comprehensive maintenance work for the Pla Endreça.
Biggest revamp in the last thirty years
The work carried out at the Magic Fountain has improved the remote-control system, with more advanced technology offering greater flexibility, robustness and reliability. The 4,760 white bulbs have also been replaced with 680 LEDs. This will mean the same lighting, but with a reduced power rating from 1,507 kW down to 72 kW. The 380 LEDs submerged beneath the water have been installed with new supports. All this makes for a more sustainable fountain, at the same time improving the experience during displays.
The new system underwent testing in July, August and these early days of September. The main pool is now full of water and checks have carried out on circuits, gaskets, valves and all the components making up the hydraulic system. Sound, light and water tests have also been carried out.
The last major revamp to the control system for the fountain was in the 90s and now, just as then, the work respected the historical factors of this infrastructure, designed by Carles Buïgas for the International Expo of 1929.
Improvements to ornamental fountains
The revamp to the Magic Fountain is part of a broader exercise to improve the city’s decorative fountains, carried out within the framework of the Pla Endreça. In all, 6.6 million euros is being invested between now and the end of 2028 to optimise fountains and improve their use of water. In four years, work should be carried out on 78 ornamental fountains in the city.
Displays resume
Displays at the Magic Fountain return from 2 October, at the usual times, from Thursday to Saturday, between 9 pm and 10 pm in October, and from 8 pm to 9 pm in November and December. In October we can see new sequences with different musical genres such as rock, jazz, classical music, rumba, soundtracks and more. Over Christmas, the fountain will offer water and light sequences with Christmas carols.
