There were 9,430 road accidents with victims in Barcelona in 2017, involving 19,784 vehicles. According to the Directorate General for Traffic (DGT), some 90% of accidents are caused by driver errors and distractions. In a bid to reduce road accidents, the City Council has signed an agreement with the DGT to fit smart safe driving systems in 5,000 vehicles run by public and private companies and in the TMB fleet operating in the city and the metropolitan area.

The pioneering move will use advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to help reduce errors and distractions among drivers, with controlled speeds, automatic braking systems and artificial vision devices.

The data collected by these smart systems will be used to detect accident black spots in the city so that action can be taken there to guarantee safer mobility for everyone. Positive discrimination measures will also be studied for vehicles with active driver support systems.

The agreement comes within the context of the Urban Mobility Plan (2013-2018) and the Local Road Safety Plan to improve safe and sustainable mobility and cut the number of deaths and injuries due to road accidents by 50% in the city by 2022.
