The collective right to educationKnowledge and education are fundamental for development and social inclusion. Because of this the idea of the city as an educator is being consolidated, whereby education acts as a crucial instrument for personal and collective growth.
An educating city invests in education for all, so that everyone is able to express, affirm and develop their potential better. To this end, a series of programmes exist in the city which have five main objectives:
- No child aged from 0 to 18 to miss out on public education.
- No youngster aged from 18 to 25 without a further education qualification.
- No adult over 25 without access to quality education and training.
- No professional teacher without the resources to fulfil their educational goal.
- No neighbourhood without an education project.
The aim of the project ‘Camí escolar, espai amic’ [school paths as friendly spaces] is for children in the city to gain greater personal autonomy and quality of life when they make their way from home to school on their own, when they’re in the park, at summer school or doing sports etc. At the same time, the project promotes community commitment and participation.
To achieve this, action is needed to help change attitudes among youngsters and the community alike: children have to be able to experiment and learn to weigh up the risks, while the community, organised or not, should help create the right conditions.
The Baobab project aims to guarantee young children’s right to holiday activities and at the same time help educational leisure flourish all year round in underprivileged neighbourhoods. Baobab also reaches out to neighbourhoods by creating alliances with entities, associations and projects at area or district levels, as well as generating new bonds within the community: half of monitors on the project’s urban camps are from the local neighbourhood.
This initiative opens up school playgrounds to neighbourhoods for public use by families, children and teenagers outside of school hours, at weekends and during the school holidays. The aim is to optimise the use of school facilities and boost their educational and social side, also offering a safe and familiar environment for city youngsters and their families to enjoy free time autonomously, with a permanent monitoring service available.
