The low emission zone comes into force
As from 1 January, vehicles without the DGT badge are not allowed to circulate in Barcelona’s low emission zone (ZBE) between 7 am and 8 pm on working days. The activation of the ZBE will keep 50,000 of the most polluting cars from entering the city.
The first available figures for traffic volumes from 7 to 10 am this morning show that compared to the same time of day on 23 December there was an 11% reduction in traffic in the city, 15% at access points to the city and 12% on the ring roads.
Up until 30 December, 4,286 vehicles were registered to use the low emission zone and in the last week the zbe.barcelona website was visited by 36,000 users. The tool for checking badges and number plates is also getting more than 11,000 visits a week.
A total of 5,969 people have already completed the procedure for the T-verda, the ticket which offers free use of the public transport system for people deregistering vehicles without the DGT environmental rating badge.
