In contrast, a comparison with the first six months of 2020 shows a 28% rise in the number of accidents with victims, as well as a 29% increase in the number of people injured, from 76 to 81, and in the number of deaths, from 5 to 8 (60% more). The reason for this increase lies in the different restrictions which affected mobility by people and vehicles during the state of emergency, up until 21 June 2020.

In terms of people seriously injured in road accidents in the first six months of this year, 82.8% form part of the most vulnerable groups: motorcycle riders, pedestrians, cyclists and riders of personal mobility vehicles (PMV). Five motorcyclists, two PMV riders and one pedestrian lost their lives.

Alcohol and distractions among accident causes

Accident causes are diverse, but the main ones constitute offences by drivers and include driving without due care, not respecting safety distances and making inappropriate turns. Among pedestrians, the main causes are not respecting traffic lights and crossing roads without using pedestrian crossings. Indirect causes, which contribute to accidents but are not the main cause, include alcohol, even though this figure is down by more than 21% compared to the same period in 2019.
