Weekend: LGBTI+ sports tournament for equality, La Mercè Fun Run and books in Catalan

The third weekend in September offers a chance to take part in an international sports tournament, or cheer participants on, with around a thousand LGBTI+ competitors from different European cities. Sport is also on the agenda on Sunday, with the traditional La Mercè Fun Run as a prelude to Barcelona’s local festival. Elsewhere, the 36th edition of Catalan Book Week is on in Av. Catedral until Sunday, offering a chance to find books you’ve been looking for and discover others too.

A new edition of southern Europe’s most important LGBTI+ multisport tournament is on from 14 to 16 September. The Panteresports is organised by the Panteres Grogues sports club and has become a leading LGBTI+ meeting for sports and other public events promoting inclusion and equal rights and combatting LGBTIphobia.

A thousand sportspeople will be taking part, hailing from Barcelona, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, Amsterdam, Valencia, Madrid, Milan, London and other cities. Saturday sees competitions in volleyball, football, basketball, padel and swimming, while on Sunday it’s the turn of beach volleyball and padel. This year’s edition pays homage to the Eurogames held in Barcelona ten years ago.

A major Barcelona sports event

The celebrations for the city’s local festival, La Mercè, are just around the corner and this Sunday brings one of the most popular fun runs held in the city, the Cursa de la Mercè. The traditional run turns forty this year and follows a 10 km route starting and finishing in Av. Reina Maria Cristina. For more information on the run click here. An essential cultural event

This is the last weekend for people to visit the book stalls at the 36th Catalan Book Week, which is on in Av. Catedral. The fair has become one of the most important cultural events in the country, demonstrating the strength and diversity of Catalan publishing and facilitating direct contact with authors, booksellers and publishers, as well as cultural events. You’ll find the full programme here.
