The project by Javier Galiana and the Spice Berberechos could be defined as a generational relief of flamenco jazz with diverse colours and origins. A concert where the Cádiz light of Galiana and Carlos Cortés plays with that of the versatile and ever-present Galician drummer Dani Domínguez, with Albert Cirera, saxophonist and one of the leading exponents of Catalan free jazz, and with the Argentine-born Paco Weht.
It has been ten years since the band last reunited on stage, and, to mark the end of this long hiatus, they have chosen to include two outstanding collaborations: Carles Dénia from Valencia and Mélodie Gimard from France. The former, coming from the jazz scene, is one of the great voices of peninsular folklore and will sing flamenco here; the latter, a pianist and composer from Perpignan, creates musical forms that integrate classical, folklore, jazz, and flamenco. And at Mercè Music, the group will perform a matured reinterpretation of Denia’s Campo de Agramante with the youthful piano energy of Gimard.
Born twenty years ago at ESMUC [Catalonia College of Music], Spice Berberechos explores the fusion of chords, rhythms, and instrumentation of flamenco and jazz. La Mercè is the meeting point of a project with diverse origins and a strong Cádiz accent.
