La Mercè Concert - Orchestra and Choir of the Gran Teatre del Liceu

Gran Teatre del Liceu

Barcelona

Symphonic

Who has never listened to Bizet's Carmen or Verdi's Un ballo in maschera? On 24 September, the Symphonic Orchestra and the Choir of Liceu will present an open-air concert so that we can enjoy these and other pieces by great composers, famous operas that will resonate in Nou Barris’ Plaça Major in front of the District Headquarters, a historic venue deeply rooted in the neighbourhood.

Josep Pons conducts the Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and Pablo Assante directs the Liceu Choir in this La Mercè Concert, where we will hear other compositions from Giuseppe Verdi (Macbeth), Donizetti (Don Pasquale), Beethoven (Fidelio), Tchaikovsky (Eugene Onegin), and Mozart (Messiah). This exceptional programme will bring to the district two of Spain's most important symphonic and choral groups.

The Orchestra and Choir of the Liceu were born in the mid-19th century when the Gran Teatre del Liceu opened its doors on La Rambla in Barcelona. Over one hundred and seventy years of history attest to their quality, as do the names associated with them: among others, those of Toscanini, Richard Strauss, Stravinsky, Falla or Toldrà, and now, Josep Pons, have held their leadership at various points in their journey.
