A String Section
Reckless Sleepers
Belgium, United Kingdom
Dance / performance
From 6 and over
Five women, elegant like performers with a philharmonic, take to the stage holding a saw. Delicately yet firmly, expectant but at the same time unruffled, they sit on their chairs and start the concert. The saw is their instrument, and they’ll use it to saw up their chairs: the legs, the bars, the seat...until they reduced them to chunks of wood and strands of wicker.
The performers of A String Section are sitting on their chairs all the way through. They don’t stand up at any point in the destruction, making extreme movements to keep their balance and carry on cutting up the furniture. Upside down to cut through a leg, or legs in the air to destroy the backrest, they engage in an extraordinary dance, accompanied by nothing more than the arpeggio of the saws.
Leen Dewilde, creator of A String Section, started breaking cups and walls, sawing up furniture and shattering various objects in 2010. The origin for this piece is a string quintet, a project where the sawing, the legs that are left and other bits of waste are as important as the action itself. A surprising show.
