“Catalunya Ciutats”, in the Museu Marítim up until the month of Apri
The exhibition revisits Catalan urbanisation from Noucentisme to the present day and is accompanied by a parallel programme of events and debates in a number of cultural centres throughout the city
The Museu Marítim is currently hosting an exhibition entitled Catalunya Ciutats (Catalan Cities), part of the programme of events celebrating the centenary of the Commonwealth of Catalonia, founded on the 6th of April, 1914.
In line with the sense of renovation that accompanied the Noucentisme movement in the early 20th century, the Commonwealth of Catalonia was the first institution to initiate territorial studies throughout Catalonia. Within the framework of state-wide construction, the institution worked to put an end to the inequalities existent between the cultured, urbane and increasingly open Catalonia, and the poor, rural Catalonia still lacking in services and infrastructure.
Catalunya Ciutats, curated by architect Roger Subirà, explores the relationship between the city and the countryside through the work of artists the likes of Perejaume, Marcel·lí Antúnez and Joan Fontcuberta and examples from numerous urban interventions.
In parallel, from January to March, a number of cultural centres in Barcelona will be hosting a series of debates focussing on architecture, the city and territory. The first session, which took place on the 20th of January in the Virreina Centre de la Imatge, will be followed by four more sessions, the next of which, entitled Ciutat, territori. Territori, ciutat, will take place on the 10th of February in the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
