Still from “Breaking Social”

Cinema against injustice and corruption

As part of the Docs of the Month programme, the film Breaking Social, by the acclaimed Swedish director Fredrik Gertten, will be screened.

It's spring, April is upon us and that means it's time to enjoy the monthly documentary film event. This time you can discover the feature film Breaking Social, a film that analyses the global patterns of kleptocracy and extractivism. This is an initiative of the DocsBarcelona Festival, in which a documentary with a different theme is shown monthly in the country's cinemas.

All societies are based on the notion of a social contract according to which one will be rewarded if one works hard, treats others with respect and follows the established rules. But there are also rule-breakers, those who use tax havens and make profits without returning them to society.

When people reach a tipping point, they start to organise and protest, as in the case of the murder of an investigative journalist in Malta or a dry river in Chile. Here you will discover those who are already fighting on the front lines of social uprisings all over the world. Breaking Social is a film that re-imagines the foundations of our societies and aims to ignite the hope that lives within each of us.

This feature film has participated in several festivals such as CPH-DOX (Denmark), DOK.fest (Germany), CinemAmbiente (Italy), One World Human Rights Film Festival (Czech Republic), Sheffield Doc/fest (England) and Dokufest Prizren (Kosovo).

The documentary film will be screened for the first time on 4 April at Cinemes Girona, but it can be seen in several places in the city: on 10 April at 18. 30 h, at the Esquerra de l'Eixample - Agustí Centelles Library; on 12 April at 20 h, at the Lluïsos d'Horta; on 17 April, at 19 h at the La Casa Elizalde Cultural Centre; on 18 April at 7 p.m., at the Centre Cívic Ateneu Fort Pienc; on 25 April at 5 p.m., at the Centre Cívic Tomasa Cuevas - Les Corts and at 7 p.m., at the Auditori de Sant Martí; and on 30 April, at 6. 30 h at the Library of Vilapicina and Torre Llobeta.

You have an opportunity to enjoy the documentary genre based on Frederik Gertten's story, thanks to the Doc of the Month initiative. The screenings can be with subtitles in Catalan or Spanish. The price of admission varies according to the venue, as it can be free with a reservation or, for example, at the Lluïsos d'Horta it is €4.
