The 'Sentada' chair, one of the pieces in the exhibition

A collection of the designs of Enric Miralles

The exhibition is part of the cycle of activities dedicated to the architect on the 20th anniversary of his death.

For the first time, the public will be able to take a look at some of the furniture and objects designed by architect Enric Miralles, a collection of pieces he created for his own house and that all share a common element: mobility. This element is what gives the exhibition its name: MIRALLES, Perpetuum Mobile. Available from May 26th to August 29th in the Disseny Hub Barcelona, with Benedetta Tagliabue and Joan Roig as curators of the display, it is part of the cycle of activities named Miralles. It is taking place now, in 2021, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the artist's death.

Amongst the objects, visitors will be able to see the Inestable table, a table that can change its shape through more than 20 different movements. There will also be the tables Dolmen, Troncos, and Tropical, each of which can be moved into at least two different positions; the Lelukaappi shelf, inspired by architect Alvar Aalto's work, and some chairs and unpublished light points. The sample, presented in a space that will imitate Miralles's home, will also include blueprints, drawings, sketches, and other audiovisuals.

Born in 1955, Enric Miralles studied architecture in the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona (Barcelona School of Architecture) and later extended his studies at Columbia University in New York. Amongst the buildings designed by him in Barcelona — in some cases, in collaboration with Carme Pinós; in others, with Benedetta Tagliabue — we can find the Parque Diagonal Mar, the Mercado de Santa Caterina, and the Gas Natural building. He was mainly known for his architectural work, though he was also a designer, photographer, and university professor.

The exhibit MIRALLES, Perpetuum Mobile is organized by the Fundació Enric Miralles, the Barcelona City Council, and the Generalitat de Catalunya.
