Cello player Narek Hakhnazaryan

The cellist Narek Hakhnazaryan at L'Auditori

A concert by the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC) accompanied on cello by Narek Hakhnazaryan.

The Russian composer Dmitri Dmitrievich Shostakovich always showed exceptional talent in his works. He entered the Petrograd Conservatory at the age of 13, studied piano and composition, and graduated in 1925 with his First Symphony op. 10. Its triumphant premiere in 1926 was followed by performances in Europe and the United States, and by the age of 19, Shostakovich was world famous. He is one of the authors of the recital given by the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya (OBC). In particular, they will play a highly emotive piece performed with great virtuosity.

The second piece is a ballet commissioned to Robert Gerhard by the Rambert company in 1941. Based on flamenco themes, Alegrías is a symphonic suite that allowed the composer to explore Spanish music, especially the more touristy music that Londoners were familiar with. Brilliant and avant-garde, its ironic and critical tone makes this score very interesting.

Finally, the third piece is Symphony No. 4, one of the most highly praised ones from Carl August Nielsen's personal symphonic catalogue.

The recital will feature Narek Hakhnazaryan on cello. Ever since winning the first prize for cello and the gold medal at the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 at the age of 22, Hakhnazaryan has performed with most of the major orchestras and in recitals and chamber music at many of the world's most prestigious festivals. Hakhnazaryan is a compelling performer, a true virtuoso with an innate musicality and an exceptional talent for connecting with his audience.
