‘Cineclubisme: el públic s’organitza’

An exhibition to celebrate the ‘Cineclubisme’

Federació Catalana de Cineclubs (Catalan Federation of Film Societies) has been about for 40 years and it's celebrating its anniversary by drawing attention to the importance of these spaces in Catalan culture.

Older cinemagoers will remember how the film societies were one of the few spaces where they could engage with and discuss some aspects of society that seemed to be off limits so that they could actively participate in changing them. It is remarkable how important they were, and they are still relevant, especially in the capitals of the different districts of Catalonia and other cities where film societies are the best spaces to see good films on the silver screen. Federació Catalana de Cineclubs is celebrating its 40th anniversary with various activities to draw attention to the vital role that it has played in spreading cinema culture throughout Catalonia. One of these is the exhibition “Cineclubisme: el públic s’organitza” (The Film Society Movement: the Audience Gets Organised) where visitors will have the chance to see how everyone who went to the film societies formed part of an organised civil society that played an active role in the cultural politics of their towns and cities. Ultimately, it was the spectators who became active decision makers in cinema as part of their institutions.

The exhibition ‘Cineclubisme: el públic s'organitza’ will be open from 24 October to 12 January, from Tuesday to Sunday, 4 to 9 pm, in the Filmoteca de Catalunya. This is a display that was curated by Juan Manuel García Ferrer and coincides with the 6th Catalan Film Society Movement Week. This will also include a series of film screenings, both classics and contemporary films.

The exhibition is completely free. You can find all the information you need on the Filmoteca website.
