‘Joaquim Capdevila. Jewellery 1959-2019’

Retrospective on work of Joaquim Capdevila at Museu del Disseny

The Catalan jeweller is a key figure in the Nova Joia movement who renewed the idea of jewellery as a means of artistic expression.

This is the 60th anniversary of Joaquim Capdevila’s start as a jeweller and goldsmith, who went on to become one of the key figures of Nova Joia in Catalonia. It was thanks, in part, to this jeweller born in Barcelona in 1944 that jewellery became a means of artistic expression. To pay tribute to his work, Museu del Disseny de Barcelona has put together a retrospective exhibition on the jeweller and goldsmith: “Joaquim Capdevila. Jewellery 1959-2019”.  The artist’s creations, which are one-of-a-kind, go well beyond the traditional concept of jewellery, not only by dispensing with precious metals and applying new materials like plastic, fabric, rubber and copper, but also by using gold and silver covered in acrylic paint or Japanese lacquer. This gives them a highly unique colour palette, making them unmistakeable for their visual quality, somewhere between painting and sculpture. This is why his art is often described as art jewels, object jewels or experiment jewels. In short, his jewellery is the artistic expression of critical reflections and personal experiences through free-form personal compositions.

The exhibition “Joaquim Capdevila. Jewellery 1959-2019” will be on from 28 September to 17 November, Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm, on the B floor at Museu del Disseny de Barcelona.

The exhibition is free of charge and open to the public. More information on the exhibition is available on the Museu del Disseny website.
