“Touching Colour. The Renewal of Pastel”

‘Touching Colour. The Renewal of Pastel’ at the Casa Garriga Nogués

With this exhibition, Mapfre Foundation explains the resurgence of this artistic technique from 1830 until the 20th century.

Pastel has been one of the most admired drawing techniques throughout art history. Its prestige has waxed and waned over time, but great painters like Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, María Blanchard and Theo van Doesburg have adopted this unique way of creating. In the 1830s, pastel experienced an unprecedented resurgence, which even led to the coining of the term “pastelist”. This fashion continued until well into the 20th century, although it never managed to become quite as legitimate as oil painting, the prime discipline. This is what the exhibition Touching Colour. The Renewal of Pastel seeks to explore; from an international perspective, it sets out to analyse the place of pastel in history. With a total of 98 works by 68 different artists, the show highlights the most important moments and top figures in the renaissance of pastel in early modernity, a time when this technique became an art in its own right.

“Touching Colour. The Renewal of Pastel” will be on from 3 October to 5 January, seven days a week at different times in the Sala Fundación Mapfre Casa Garriga Nogués. In addition to the artists mentioned above, there will also be works by others such as Eugène Boudin, Odilon Redon and Edgar Degas.

It costs €3 to visit the exhibition “Touching Colour. The Renewal of Pastel”. You can buy your tickets at the ticket counter or on the Sala Fundación Mapfre Casa Garriga Nogués website.
