FADfest returns

From the 25th of June to the 10th of July, the design festival will include events such as the “Best Design of the Year” exhibition and the conference “Open Design/Shared Creativity”

FADfest returns – the annual world of design event which, this year, will also put the finishing touches to the Barcelona Design Festival. For two weeks the event will attempt to bring together companies and creative individuals, acquaint the general public with the different facets of design and promote artistic excellence through a series of conferences, workshops, debates, guided tours and chats.

On the exhibition front, Smart Flexibility joins with the Best Design of the Year to present a total of more than 500 finalists for annual awards presented in a number of design disciplines including architecture, graphic and industrial design, advertising, interior design, craftsmanship, art and fashion. As with every edition, presentations will include the Laus Awards for graphic design and visual communication and the FAD Sebastià Gasch Awards for innovation in performance art, among others.

Another FADfest event is Open Design / Shared Creativity, an international conference focussing on the opportunities and challenges presented by the latest innovations in design in general. For example, Oscar Tomico will cover smart, or e-textiles, Ramos Sangüesa will combine design with auteur cuisine and Alastair Parvin will present an approach to opensource architecture. Other presenters will include the likes of Jan Boel, Thomas Lommee and Simone Cicero.

This year’s MaterLab workshop will explore the possibilities of flexible structures and active materials, while Ultra-Lab will focus on “open objects”, digital manufacturing and 3D printing.

With regard to open days, Typoweek will present an approach to typography and graphic design, while Rockpaperpixel, which fuses design and communication, will include a presentation by Maria Popova, the young founder and editor of the platform Brain Pickings.

FADfest will take place from the 25th of June to the 10th of July in the main offices of the Foment de les Arts i del Disseny (FAD), located in the Museu del Disseny, though parallel activities will also take place in other artistic venues, associations and galleries throughout the city.
