Still from the film 'Oray' by Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay

Author's and independent works are the stars of the German Film Library's Current Cinema series

Co-organised with the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, cultural diversity is one of the main themes of the chosen titles.

The Filmoteca de Catalunya and the Goethe-Institut Barcelona did not want to miss their annual meeting with the German Film Today series  in 2020. In this, its ninth edition, the initiative presents a dozen films, many of them first works, focusing on the most outstanding auteur films and the most original and innovative independent films. There will be screenings of the cycle until the 14th of November.

In many of the films, cultural diversity plays a very important role, a subject clearly related to the migratory reality of many of the directors in the programme. For example, in Es gilt das gesprochene Wort (30th and 31st of October at the Filmoteca) a German woman gets married to a young Turkish man she met on a trip, a relationship that becomes more complex than expected; In Oray (29th of October and November1st) a young Muslim couple has to separate for a few months on the orders of an imam; as for Futur Drei (6th and 14th of November), the starting character is a millennial who grows up in the comfortable and rich atmosphere of his parents' home, who emigrated from Iran to Germany three decades ago. The series also includes titles such as Adam & Evelyn (29th and 30th of October), by Andreas Goldstein, and Leif in Concert - Vol. 2 ( November 7th), a declaration of love for bars that programme (or used to programme) music by their director, Christian Klandt.
