The Georgian film "Corn Island" opens in cinem
Directed by George Ovashvili and winner of the Best Film award at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, the film opens on the 22nd of May in original version with Catalan subtitles
The Inguri River forms the border between Georgia and the Republic of Abkhazia, two countries who have yet to smooth over tensions that have remained since the war of 1992-1993. Every spring the river brings fertile soil from the Caucasus region to the plains of Akhazia and the north-west of Georgia, creating a series of islets, one of which is home to a grandfather and his adolescent grandson, the two protagonists of Corn Island, who have settle in the area in order to work the land together and plant corn.
This is the starting point for a film that, in the style of a minimalist fable, develops into a reflection on survival and transition to adolescence with wounds from the recent war as a backdrop. The film is Georgian in origin, directed by George Ovashvili and opens in Barcelona on the 22nd of May having previously obtained the Best Film Award at the prestigious International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary and positive critiques at other festivals such as that of San Sebastian and the D'A – the International Auteur Film Festival of Barcelona.
