A scene from the musical

The world’s most stellar rock opera at Teatre Tivoli

The musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" is arriving in Barcelona in a version that has already triumphed in London and New York.

Large scale hit stage musicals don’t tend to make it to Barcelona complete with their original staging and casts. But this version of the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the few exceptions, and will be calling in at Teatre Tivoli for a few days from 19 April. The musical shot to fame following the premiere of the 1973 film version, directed by Norman Jewison, and the stage version coming to Barcelona features Ted Neeley, the same actor who played the role of Jesus in on the screen.

With lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber , and focusing on the last week of Jesus' life as narrated in the Gospel of St. John, Jesus Christ Superstar was not exempt from controversy regarding its staging or content, and was banned in many countries. The character of Judas Iscariot is especially important in the musical, and, in fact one of the major storylines is his relation with Jesus. Intentional anachronisms, with references to our time, are also a hallmark of the production. The version that can be seen at Teatre Tívoli, which is directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo and  performed in English with subtitles, can be seen until 29 April.
