Josep Coté and his camera

Photographer by day; violinist by night

The exhibition ‘Josep Coté, photographer on board’ can be visited until the end of September in the lobby of the Museu Marítim.

During the day, he photographed the passengers and the crew and during the night, he entertained the evening by playing the violin. Josep Coté, photographer and musician, portrayed hundreds of scenes aboard the ocean liner ‘Marqués de Comillas’, of the Spanish Transatlantic Company. These are some images that can be seen in the exhibition ‘Josep Coté, ships' photographer’ at the Museu Marítim. This exhibition is made possible thanks to a donation that the museum received at the end of 2018 that included 540 negatives and some of the material that Coté used to photograph. It is of great value since it represents an entire collection of the photographer's legacy.

‘Josep Coté, ships' photographer’ is an exhibition made up of several snapshots that the author took on board the ocean liner, in addition to tools and photographic material used by him. Various photographs display everyday scenes where passengers and crew can be seen which are historically invaluable as so few exist. The dining rooms, the kitchen, the cabins, the living rooms, the decks appear... all framed in the post-war period of Spain.

You will find the exhibition in the lobby of the Museu Marítim until September 30. It can be visited free of charge from Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 8 pm, with the last entry at 7 pm. It is available in Catalan, Spanish and English.
