Sant Jordi is also being celebrated at Barcelona’s civic centres
This enormous literary festival is being celebrated in different spots around the city and you can enjoy a large number activities at places like Can Castelló and Can Basté
The festival of Sant Jordi takes place mostly in the street and this year, since it falls on a Sunday, promises to be more multitudinous than ever. It’s a day when the citizens of Barcelona stroll around their city, buying roses and browsing book stalls. But there are other ways of taking part in this experience without joining the crowds on the Rambla. For example, head for one of the city’s civic centres and you’ll find a host of interesting creative activities for free.
For example, at Can Castelló in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district very near to Galvany Market, the locals hold a yearly book exchange on 19 and 20 April. But if you’re more into writing than reading, on 22 April in the Farinera civic centre, near to Plaça de les Glòries, you’ll find a speed writing competition in which you’ll have 90 minutes to leave your mark on literary history. Perhaps you’re more interested in family-oriented activities. If that’s the case take your kids to Can Oliver in Les Corts on April 23 to see the show La dragona Bufalletres. And if you’re in the Sarrià neighbourhood in the days following Sant Jordi, you’ll find a number of literature related activities on offer, including talks, workshops and readings.
