Open doors, exhibitions and online activities for an atypical Santa Eulàlia Festivities

The activities are adapted to the health situation and the most traditional events will be broadcast on the website barcelona.cat/santaeulalia and on social networks, keeping the open day visits and the exhibitions to do in person.

Santa Eulàlia, the winter festivities and one of the most awaited traditions in Barcelona, is celebrated on 12 February. This year, the groups and popular culture associations, giants and other festive figures that are the protagonists have made an extra effort to adapt the activities to the current situation. This year, the parades and dances held in the streets with the presence of the public are suspended, but other activities have been adapted to the appropriate health measures so that you can enjoy them safely.

On Friday 12th, the two most significant traditional events of the festivity will take place virtually: at 12 noon there will be the ceremonial hanging of the Santa Eulàlia pennon, and at 7.15 pm, the laying of a wreath for the saint. The events can be followed through social networks and on the website of the Festes de Santa Eulàlia. In addition, on the 12th and 13th there will also be the usual open day to different facilities and museums in the city. You can check the complete list of the participating centres here.

Previously, on the 6th and 7th of February, some exhibitions will be inaugurated for the occasion. A gathering of giant Laia figures from Ciutat Vella will be held in the City Hall Courtyard to pay homage to the city’s patron and vindicate the role of women in popular culture. On the other hand, in El Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria there will be, until the 21st, the traditional sample of mini-giants and bighead figures, an exhibition of children's beast figures, the Corpus Christi beast figures exhibition ‘El Corpus és bestial’ and the photographic exhibition ‘15 anys de les nostres catifes. De Catalunya a la UNESCO’ of Corpus flower carpets. At La Casa dels Entremesos you can visit the permanent exhibition of Barcelona’s festive imagery and the temporary exhibitions ‘Per no perdre el temps. Calendaris tradicionals, des del món rural a la societat industrial’, until February 14th, and ‘Ombres xineses de Joan Amades’, until March 7th. In this same space, on Saturday 13th, there will be a puppet show, ‘La Laia i el fantasma entremaliat’, by the Titelles Sebastià Vergés company.

In addition, on the occasion of this year’s festivities, Barcelona City Council is publishing the new book Gegants i gegantes de Barcelona. 52 retallables, a format created by the designers of La Japonesa, with illustrations by Laia Berloso and texts by Nico Alonso. The book will be presented on Wednesday 10th at 6 pm in an event that will be streamed on the YouTube channel of Cultura Popular and you can buy it in bookstores in the city, in the municipal bookstore of the Sala Ciutat and other specialised centres.

Through the Cultura Popular social networks and the Santa Eulàlia website, you can recover activities from other editions, such as the Diada Castellera and the correfocs, and follow this year's online activities, such as the Protocols de l’Àliga or choir performances, as well as collections of images that the federations, entities and groups have prepared for this edition.
