Watercolour designs for the stained-glass windows of the Sagrada Familia on display in an exhibition
Joan Vila i Grau's creations can be seen at Sala Parés until the end of December.
In 1999, the painter and stained-glass artist Joan Vila i Grau (Barcelona 1932) was commissioned to produce a series of draft paintings for the design of the stained-glass windows of the Sagrada Familia. After 18 years of work, the artist has completed the windows for the transept and the apse of the church. Now, until 3 December, the Sala Parés gallery is hosting an exhibition titled Les Formes de la Llum, Joan Vila i Grau. Aquarel·les pels vitralls de la Sagrada Família featuring the preliminary watercolour designs that Joan Vila i Grau produced for the windows.
Visitors to the gallery will see immediately that all of the designs for the windows are abstract and have a searching, spiritual, metaphysical quality, aiming to bathe the temple in colour. Vila i Grau was the logical choice for this commission since he is an expert on the history of stained-glass and has long-standing experience as a creator, with works at churches like Verge de la Pau in Barcelona, the Orfeó in Gràcia and Caves Codorniu in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.
