Barcelona's women scientists

Follow the route organized by Visit Barcelona and discover the professionals who revolutionized the city's scientific community.

Women scientists have not always had the recognition they deserve, because, despite their great contributions to research, they have been left in the background due to the conventions and sexist dynamics of society. For the scientific community in the city of Barcelona, this has been no different. For this reason, Visit Barcelona is organizing one of its thematic routes paying tribute to these professionals. Women scientist trail will allow you to discover some of the most important female researchers in the history of the city.

You'll begin the route by discovering the story of the biologist and botanist Creu Casas who, as well as being one of the most important pharmacists of the 20th century, was the country's first female professor of botany. A visit to the Royal Academy of Pharmacy of Catalonia will give you an insight into the history of this renowned and award-winning scientist.

Another remarkable visit is to the Laribal Gardens, where the Escola del Bosc was located, an institution that opted for open-air classes and which, thanks to Rosa Sensat's pedagogical innovations, allowed students to learn outside the classroom. The scientist and pedagogue was the forerunner of the Catalan public school model and was very important for the science of education.

The route will take you to the Castell dels Tres Dragons, the modernist building that houses one of the headquarters of the Natural Science Museum of Barcelona. After its use as a restaurant, the zoologist Roser Nos Ronchera managed to open it to the public and attract the attention of politicians to raise funds to finance its renovations. She also led the first modernization of the Barcelona Zoo, which helped to bring the zoo to its current state.

The itinerary suggests you visit other spaces such as the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia, in reference to the doctor Dolors Aleu i Riera; the Francesca Bonnemaison Library, named after the pedagogue who fought to promote female education, Francesca Bonnemaison i Farriols; and the University of Barcelona, where Maria Assumpció Català i Poch studied, one of the pioneers of astronomy and the first woman to obtain a doctorate in mathematics at the university.

Follow the route and discover the women scientists to whom it pays tribute, and you will ensure that their legacy is not forgotten. More information on this link.
