Nature and sustainable awareness to protect it

A wide repertoire of activities in Barcelona connected with World Environment Day.

In 1973, the United Nations General Assembly declared 5 June World Environment Day to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Many municipalities and organisations around the world arrange activities related to the environment and sustainability on that day. In the case of Barcelona, notable events include those being held at La Fábrica del Sol, which is organising activities together with other facilities in the city, and those at Aula Ambiental Les Corts, based in Can Deu Civic Centre.

In Europe, World Environment Day has become the backbone of European Sustainable Development Week. In this context, Barcelona City Council and the Barcelona + Sostenible network have promoted many different activities for Sustainability Week from 31 May to 7 June. On La Fàbrica del Sol's website, you can see all of these events, which include 16 guided walks through natural and urban settings in Barcelona, the starting pistol for the Music in the Parks festival, activities for all ages at La Fábrica del Sol, which has recently been renovated in accordance with sustainable criteria, and a special program at Environmental Classrooms in several neighbourhoods.

Among the activities organised by these environmental facilities, the extensive programme offered by Aula Ambiental Les Corts from 1 to 7 June stands out. The facility is dedicating its Environment Week to the life and work of Ernst Haeckel, a biologist and naturalist who made important contributions to the natural sciences. The 100th anniversary of his death is being commemorated in 2019. The activities in Les Corts include two exhibitions, one about climate refugees, of whom there are expected to be 250 million by 2050, and another displaying artworks that link art with recycling. On 4 June, there will be a screening of the documentary Frightened about the environmental impact of sea transport to commemorate World Oceans Day. A poetry recital, walks and outings, meteorology and ethnobotany workshops, the [Re]Eva show and open doors at Can Deu kitchen garden round off the programme, which will culminate with a family Eco-party in Plaça de la Concòrdia.
