Barcelona has taken a step forward in the fight against plastic waste with the publication of a new best practice guide on reducing single-use plastic waste in fish and seafood sales. This is an initiative promoted by Barcelona City Council in collaboration with the guilds, fish mongers, municipal markets, distributor companies and entities from the sector.

The guide, which can be downloaded for free here, offers practical recommendations and viable alternatives to reduce the use of plastic packaging and materials throughout the retail chain, from harvesting and distribution to the final point of sale. The aim is to move towards a more sustainable retail model, in line with the Barcelona Climate Plan and municipal commitments to sustainability and waste reduction.

A shared commitment

This initiative is particularly focused on one of the key local commerce sectors, which is fish mongers and fresh produce retail points, which often use singe-use plastic for conservation, transport or hygiene purposes. The new guide puts forward concrete solutions adapted to the reality of the sector, such as reusable materials, compostable packaging or return systems.

The City Council is working together with the retail sector to promote a sustainable transition without risking economic viability or service quality, with the aim of reinforcing the role of commerce as an active agent in the fight against climate change.

As well as technical recommendations, the guide includes best practices that have already been successfully applied in various establishments in the city, and also information on regulations and examples that could help to inspire changes in commercial habits. It is designed to be a useful and realistic tool for fish mongers, markets, distributors and shops that want to move towards sustainability whilst maintaining service excellence.
