Juan Carlos Martel Bayod

Juan Carlos Martel Bayod (Barcelona, 1976) is a cultural manager, international cultural adviser, stage director and director of cultural institutions. He studied economics and graduated in theatre performance from the Institut del Teatre. He earned a postgraduate degree in Cultural Project Design (UB), an EMPA (ESADE) and a General Management Programme (IESE), and has also trained in Italy, England, Argentina and the USA (Directors Lab, Lincoln Center). He has directed and written more than 30 theatre productions and won awards like the Butaca, the Critic’s Award and the Amic de la Gent Gran. With 15 years of experience in cultural leadership, he was part of the Teatre Lliure (2015–2017) management team, served as the international adviser for the Fundació Teatro Nazionale della Toscana (2018) and was the managing director of the Fundació Teatre Lliure – Teatre Públic de Barcelona (2019–2024), where he spearheaded digitalisation, sustainability and the attraction of new audiences, as well as an update of its byelaws, internal rules and code of ethics. He co-founded the Directors Lab of the Mediterranean in Beirut (2018) and the Barcelona Arts College (2024), where he has designed interdisciplinary educational programmes associated with the arts. He has also taught at the UPF, ESMUC and UIC. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Barcelona Culture Council and the University Advisory Council of the UIC.
