Welcome to the cemetery: Roger Luckhurst’s heart and soul
Horror has been explored in many different ways throughout the history of literature, but one of the genres that constituted a turning point in this area was the Gothic novel. British writer Roger Luckhurst, who was a roaring success at previous editions of the 42 Festival, has become an esteemed expert in this genre, analysing it in books such Gothic: An Illustrated History, as well as writing his own literary works. He has also analysed other subgenres related to horror, such as the zombie genre, and examined aspects that influence how fear is generated, such as trauma. The latest addition to his oeuvre, Graveyards (published in Spanish by Blume), studies the evolution of funeral rituals over the course of history. This adds yet another angle to his already multifaceted perspective of the elements essential to generating fear, though in this case, it is more cultural than literary. His work also includes analyses of horror films such as The Shining and Alien. He will talk about his view on disturbing cultural elements with horror author Gemma Solsona.
