Immortality, identity and memory: The themes that inhabit V. E. Schwab’s works
For two decades now, the prolific, multi-award-winning American author V. E. Schwab has been exploring issues that have shaped her life but that are underrepresented in conventional literature. With a wide-ranging cultural and educational background, including studies in astrophysics and a master’s degree in the representation of monsters in medieval art, Schwab has explored themes such as memory and the struggle against oblivion, immortality and identity in around twenty published works. Especially known for The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and the Shades of Magic trilogy, she has recently published Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil (Umbriel). In this case, she uses the story of lesbian vampires to discuss hunger in every sense of the word and to argue that women must seek what they want, rather than simply making do with what life gives them. Schwab’s conversation with the ‘booktoker’ Maryam Assakat about her career and the themes of her books, which have resonated especially with vulnerable communities will be one of the day’s must-attend events.
