Coordination with the Catalan government to tackle the spike in Covid-19 cases

The City Council is working with the Government of Catalonia to actively help stop the spread of Covid-19, given the detection of 29 small outbreaks in the city. To this end, the emergency joint commission between the two administrations met today.

Most of the outbreaks detected originated from informal get-togethers, family gatherings or leisure activities. Each outbreak consists of three or four cases.

According to the Mayor, Ada Colau, there are no plans to apply a citywide lockdown at present, but possible restrictions are being studied and may be applied if the situation doesn’t improve. The commission agreed to set up a joint technical office to look at these measures, which may be put in place in the coming days.

The City Council offered to boost the team of trackers by adding forty or fifty municipal workers to follow up on cases, but the Government of Catalonia declined.

Citizen responsibility

People are reminded that individual responsibility is the key to preventing the spread of the virus and that basic prevention measures must continue to be applied:

  • Wash your hands often.
  • Keep a safety distance of 1.5 metres from others whenever possible.
  • Wear face masks in public places and on public transport.
