The main areas where the work is expected to be carried out, arranged according to the priority of each space’s needs, are parking and logistics as well as sales floors. Funded by the the Municipal Institute of Markets, the project has already been approved and has been put out to tender.

The remaining budget of 1.4 million euros will be used for renovating the 3,600 square metres of the Boqueria’s streets, as from January 2023. The entire area’s paving will be changed and a single surface put in place throughout the facility. Auxiliary work will also be carried out relocating several of the market’s elements and signage in its temporarily occupied spaces.

Safety measures will be in place to enable activities in previously unused areas, as the work will be carried out in stages to ensure as little disruption as possible to the facility’s everyday business. Work is expected to start in January and last for ten weeks. At the same time, approval has also been given for the project to instal pigeon-control systems, similar to the ones already in operation in the neighbouring Plaça de la Gardunya.

The renovation work is the result of the government measure for preserving and improving this Ciutat Vella market. This includes a plan which has seen the construction and launch, over the last few years, of a cookery classroom, revamped lighting and a renovated and improved sewerage system.
