Work under way on a new industrialised public housing construction in Sant Martí

Work gets under way on 42 public homes made with industrialised production methods and using wood in C/ Pallars, in the neighbourhood of El Besòs i el Maresme. The project has numerous environmental and sustainability advantages and will be one of the tallest wooden housing developments in the city, along with the cooperative housing project at Pla dels Cirerers, in Nou Barris.

The structure will use 1,103 pieces made with Norway spruce from sustainable forests with PEFC certificates, the most widely implemented forest certification system around the world.

Using conventional construction methods, a building of this type could take up to two years to build, yet this industrialised technique with prefabricated pieces cuts that time frame to just over a year, also minimising the impact on the surroundings with less noise and dust. The cost of the project is 5,034,960 euros and work should be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

Housing developments built with wood are an evolution of the APROP temporary housing blocks, made from recycled shipping containers and the city’s first solution for creating housing with the lowest possible environmental impact. This block brings the number of housing projects using industrialised construction to nine, in a move to expand the city’s stock of public housing with affordable rents.
