Barcelona Christmas Festival fills Plaça Catalunya with street arts
The festival brings 357 functions with theatre, dance, circus and music in four daily time frames, from 20 to 30 December, with 20 companies, six of them international, and twenty premieres.
Plaça Catalunya becomes a large stage from 20 to 30 December, with family shows featuring circus and dance, plus concerts and a grand show with a choir. The programme runs from morning till night in this second edition of the Barcelona Christmas Festival, which continues under the direction of Sergi Ots and has Jordi Duran as the curator of the shows in the evenings.
The festival brings together nearly twenty companies (six of them international), nine music groups and twenty premieres. The stage set for the programme is Un nou miratge by Carles Piera, a monumental installation with shows featuring light, colour and sculptural forms.
Each day starts with family mornings, with the show Estacions de Nadal, where four companies (Mambo Project, Zero en Conducta, Pea Green Boat, Cía Andrea Díaz Reboredo) have been invited to create intimate visual and object theatre projects and more.
Circus and dance afternoons will be offered from 5 pm to 7 pm, placing the focus on street arts with acrobatics, musical juggling, urban dance and physical theatre, with the MC as Maria Solà, better known as Mama Calypso. Later it’s time for musical evenings from 7 pm to 8 pm, featuring folk, jazz, rap, electronic music, Latin sounds, mixed sounds and other live music with artists such as Alosa, Meritxell and Judit Neddermann and Barrut.
Spectacular nights start at 7.45 pm with the show Asceta by Chey Jurado (no function on 24, 25 and 26), followed by the show Nadal, un viatge inesperat, which features the Cor de Teatre, a choir specialising in combining the stage and music, using their voices to explain the story of somebody who accidentally ends up in a world full of magic, illusions and excitement.
Barcelona Christmas Festival in the districts
The festival reaches the city’s districts with three functions of the show La Bande à Tyrex, by the company of the same name, who will be performing during the afternoons of circus and dance in Plaça Catalunya. The functions will be on 22 December at 12 noon in L’Eixample (Ronda de Sant Antoni with Plaça del Pes de la Palla) and at 6 pm in Sant Martí (Plaça del 25 de Novembre); and on 23 December at 12 noon in Gràcia (Centre Cívic La Sedeta).
