Improvements at 79 publicly managed schools in the summer holidays

Work is under way at 79 publicly operated schools during the summer holidays, as various renovation projects, extensions and improvements are carried out. New teaching projects and the age of some buildings mean than work is needed every year to maintain the best possible conditions at schools. Over the course of 2022, work is being carried out at 121 city schools.

Work complements other projects carried out within the same school as part of the following:

  • Painting plan. This plan reconditions and improves educational spaces at each school every ten years, keeping centres in the best possible state.
  • Dining-room and kitchen plan. This entails a complete or partial renovation of school dining-rooms to be able to offer students a quality varied diet in a pleasant environment.
  • Furniture plan. This renewal plan consists of replacing old study chairs with new ones and giving classrooms a more pleasant environment where pupils are more inclined to improve their learning.
  • Playground plan. This plan transforms playgrounds to make them more natural, providing co-educational communal spaces and also offering climate shelters which are regularly open to the neighbourhood.
  • Energy transition plan. This plan seeks better energy efficiency, the generation of green energy and comfortable indoor and outdoor temperatures through natural cross-ventilation and the renovation of façades and rooftops. Solar panelling is also being installed at various schools.

As part of the Neighbourhood Plan, the City Council is investing 5.8 million euros on projects with an educational equity perspective, improving schools in areas where social support is a priority. At the same time, work continues on major projects and new schools, as is the case with the Institut Angeleta Ferrer, which will start using a new building for the 2022-2023 school year, as well as the drafting of the basic and final projects for the Escola Can Maiol.

A sum of 41.8 million euros is to be invested in 2022, funded by the two administrations making up the Barcelona Education Consortium: Barcelona City Council (with a sum of 34,018,523 euros) and the Catalan Ministry for Education (with a sum of 7,852,026 euros).
