More subsidies for extra-curricular sports activities

In an effort to make sports activity more accessible for all, Barcelona City Council increased its contribution this year by allocating nearly four million euros in the subsidy programme for sports activities. In all, the 15,365 subsidies given represented an increase of 10.3%.

By district, Ciutat Vella was the district where the most subsidies were awarded in relation to the number of children and young people who live there, with 13.4% of them benefitting. The district was followed by Nou Barris, where 11.4% of children and young people benefitted. By gender, males benefitted the most (62.3%). The subsidy programme also seeks to foster inclusive sport, and this year awarded 595 subsidies to children and young people with functional diversity, accounting for 3.9% of the total.

How do subsidies for sports activities work?

The Barcelona Institute of Sports (IBE) awards three types of subsidies. Depending on family income, subsidies cover between 30% and 90% of the cost of the activity. On average, the subsidy per child or young person who benefits comes out at 259,58 euros.

Seventh edition of the subsidy programme to foster sport

The subsidy programme to foster sports activity among children and young people was launched during the 2014-2015 school year. The sum awarded and the number of subsidies given have increased over the year, from 3,278 to this year’s 15,365, and from an initial overall sum of 600,000 euros to nearly 4 million this year.
