Barcelona Motorcycle Observatory launched
Agreement with the employers’ association Anesdor, the organisation Motoristes per Barcelona and the Association for the Prevention of Road Accidents, with the support of the DGT, to work together to improve safety for pedestrians. The goal of the new body is to make this means of transport safer and more sustainable.
The Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, chairs the meeting to constitute the Motorcycle Observatory
The founding manifesto of the Observatory prioritises the defence, freedom and safety of pedestrians as an essential condition for achieving safe coexistence in the city between different uses and means of mobility.
Bearing in mind that motorcycles account for 30% of journeys with private vehicles and 6.2% of the total, the proposals and recommendations are essentially based around three areas: cutting road accidents involving motorcycles, improving the organisation of motorcycle parking, and the energy transition and decarbonisation of two-wheeled motor vehicles.
More space on pavements, more safety for motorcyclists
One of the goals is to double the number of advanced zones for motorcycles in streets in L’Eixample and free up pavements with 20,000 new on-street parking spaces during this term of office, on top of the 5,000 that have already been executed since 2023.
Another priority is to immediately cut accidents with deaths and serious injuries by 30%, with the aim of halving them by 2030. The recommendations planned by the Observatory combine the responsibility of the motorcyclist with aspects relating to a more adapted infrastructure.
For example, the use of safety equipment will be promoted and measures studied such as an increase in marker posts in urban tunnels and sharp turns on ring roads, plus power-generating shock absorbers.
Pioneering initiative
The creation of the Observatory represents an achievement for the motorcycle sector, as it is the first time that the employers’ association Anesdor, the organisation Motoristes per Barcelona and the Association for the Prevention of Accidents, P(A)T, have signed a permanent collaboration manifesto with the General Traffic Directorate (DGT).
