Republican activist and militant Miquel Pedrola has a street named after him

The change to the city’s street name index recognises the young anti-fascist activist killed on the Aragon front in 1936, at just 19 years of age. The street name replaces the name of the military figure Almirall Churruca in the Barceloneta neighbourhood.

The recognition for Miquel Pedrola gained momentum after the discovery in 2008 of a painted message from the republican era calling for Carrer de Sant Miquel to be renamed after the militant from the Barceloneta neighbourhood.

A campaign by local residents managed to preserve and renovate the graffiti, which was at risk of disappearing due to building work.

As a result of this popular movement, work then focused on naming a street in the district after Pedrola. The full Ciutat Vella council meeting gave its approval on 21 July to change the name of Carrer Almirall Churruca, and seven months later the change has now been applied and the new name plaque unveiled.
